THE PROJECT

This project aims to digitize the literary space of Apollonius’ Argonautica. Readers and scholars of Apollonius can access an interactive reconstruction of the Argo’s voyage charted onto the modern map of the Mediterranean region.

To visualize Apollonius’s literary space and make it more accessible to a wider audience was a core idea of my dissertation: Religious Multiculturalism in Apollonius’ Argonautica. Like other scholars before me, I believe that we, as well as readers from any time, are meant to read the poem through the lens of our own reality. The Hellenistic poet himself definitely did this, even though he reinterpreted the very ancient Argonautic myth. It also appears that mapping the text onto the real landscape makes reading Apollonius’ complex Greek somewhat easier.

 

This project is an open resource. My research on the Argonautica is an ongoing work, and I welcome your comments and suggestions. In the spirit of scholarship and knowledge, I strive to continually improve and enhance this resource for the benefit of all users.
